Martyrs of Vietnam: Andrew Dung Lac and One Hundred Sixteen Companions

Feast Day: December 21

 

Andrew Dung Lac was born in Vietnam. He grew up Catholic and became a priest. He served in the Catholic missions in Vietnam until government persecution of Christians became rampant. Andrew was arrested with St. Peter Thi and they were put in prison. While in prison, they were tortured. Andrew was beheaded on December 21, 1839.

The Vietnamese Martyrs include ninety-six Vietnamese, eleven Spanish, and ten French missionaries. Pope John Paul II canonized them all on June 19, 1988.
