As a very young man, Vincent de Paul became a priest. To Vincent, the most important thing for him to do with his life was to give thanks to God by serving Him. Vincent chose to serve God by helping people that were less fortunate.

Vincent quickly became recognized as a gentle and kind man. Old and young people loved him! Tales of his generosity and kindness spread many places. Vincent gave of himself night and day to help by nursing the sick and by helping the poor find shelter.

He also gathered other men and women like himself who wanted to dedicate their lives to God and to serve the poor. The men became the religious community that today is called the Vincentians. The women became the Sisters of Charity.

Even though Vincent did everything he could to help, he always needed money. Vincent was a gracious and charming man. He visited many wealthy families and told them how much the poor people in their town were suffering. When they heard Vincent's stories, they were usually eager to donate money to his work.

One particular trip to a wealthy family did not go as smoothly as the others. Vincent went to the court of Queen Anne of Austria. Anne had heard of Vincent de Paul and knew of his teachings and ministry. She respected him a great deal, but she didn't always agree with everything he said. Vincent won her over by explaining that the true measure of a Christian is their devotion to others. Anne agreed to make a donation.

Due to all of his work in helping other people, after his death, Vincent was named the patron saint of charitable organizations.
