Bible Story: Moses from Exodus 3:1-12

Parent and Family Background

Many years after Joseph lived, God chose Moses to be the leader of the Hebrew people. The Hebrews were God’s chosen people when they lived in Egypt. God wanted Moses to lead them out of slavery in Egypt. In this story, God speaks to Moses through the burning bush.

Moses

Exodus 3:1-12

Moses was tending a flock of sheep. He led the animals across the desert and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There he saw a bush that was on fire. As he looked closer, he was surprised. The bush was on fire, but it was not turning into ashes. So, Moses decided, “I must go over to look at this remarkable sight.”

When the Lord saw Moses coming over to look at the bush, God called out to him, “Moses! Moses!”

Moses answered, “Here I am.”

God said, “I am the God of your father. Do not come any closer. Take your sandals off of your feet, because the place where you stand is holy ground.”

Moses removed his sandals. God continued, “I have heard the cries of my people in Egypt. I know they suffer at the hands of their slave drivers. That is why I have come to rescue them. I will bring them out of Egypt to a better country. Moses, I will send you to Pharaoh. You will lead my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.”

Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh? How can I lead the Israelites out of Egypt?”

God answered Moses, “I will be with you.”

Moses was still unsure. He asked God, “If I go to the Israelites, how will they know that I speak the truth?”

God replied, “Assemble the leaders of the Israelites. Tell them that God has appeared to you. God is concerned about the way they are being treated in Egypt. Explain that God has decided to rescue them from their misery. God will bring them to a land flowing with milk and honey.”

God continued, “Tell the Israelites all this. Then they will know that I have sent you.”
