Bible Story: Mary — The Visitation from Luke 1: 39-45

Parent and Family Background

When Mary was with child, she traveled to visit her relative, Elizabeth. As Elizabeth greeted Mary, Elizabeth felt her baby leap inside her. Elizabeth told Mary that she was blessed among women and that her baby was blessed.

This reading follows immediately upon the story of the Annunciation in Luke’s gospel. Luke’s point in this passage seems to be to make the connection between John and Jesus.

Mary – The Visitation

Luke 1:39-45

Mary set out in a hurry to go to Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, she could feel her baby leap inside her.

Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and cried out in a loud voice, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. How does this happen to me, the mother of my Lord comes to me? When I heard your voice, my baby leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed what was spoken to you.”
