Mary – The Annunciation
Luke 1: 26-38
God sent the angel Gabriel to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to a man named Joseph. The angel said to Mary, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.”
Mary was troubled and wondered what this greeting meant.
The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary. God has a special plan for you. You will give birth to a son and name him Jesus. He will be great and called the Son of God.”
Mary said, “How can this be, since I have had no relations with a man?”
The angel said to her in reply, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you. Therefore the child will be called holy.” The angel continued, “Your relative Elizabeth is also expecting a baby in her old age. Nothing is impossible for God.”
Then Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”
Then the angel departed.
