Parent and Family Background
Jeremiah was a sixth to seventh century Hebrew prophet. He spoke out against religious laxity and the social ills of Israel. He warned about the disasters that would follow if people did not repent. This story tells of Jeremiah’s call to prophesy.
The Call of Jeremiah
Jeremiah 1:4-10Jeremiah told the story of how he became a prophet.
God spoke to me. He said, “Before you were born, I knew you. I formed you and created you. Before you were born, I appointed you a prophet to all nations.”
“Ah, Lord God!” I said, “I do not know how to speak well. I am too young.”
But God answered me, “Do not say that you are too young. You will go where I send you. You will speak whatever I command you. Do not be afraid because I will always be with you.”
Then God extended his hand and touched my mouth, saying, “See, I place my words in your mouth! Today, I set you over nations and kingdoms. Sometimes you will destroy and demolish. Other times, you will build and plant.”
