Bible Story: Job Based on the Book of Job

Parent and Family Background

The Book of Job is a look at the problem of undeserved suffering. At this time, people believed that suffering was a deserved punishment from God for sinful behavior. The author of Job challenges this belief in this story about Job.

Job

Book of Job

Job was a good man. He loved God and avoided evil. For many years, Job’s life was filled with good fortune. He had seven sons and three daughters. He had seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred donkeys, and many servants.

Then Job began to experience many years of misfortune. All his children died in a windstorm. And a great fire consumed all his livestock and servants.

Job’s three friends heard all about his troubles. So, they set out to see Job and console him. They sat with Job for many days and nights. They listened to Job.

After Job’s friends heard all that Job had to say, they agreed that God was punishing Job for his sins. Job was stunned at their conclusion. Job knew he was an innocent man. He had not sinned. He could not understand why God would punish him.

Job cried out in despair, “I wish my life had not changed. I long for the days when God watched over me and kept me safe from harm. I wish my children were with me.”

The Lord heard Job’s cry and restored his family and his possessions. Job lived happily with his family until he was an old man.
