Parent and Family Background
We first hear of Mary Magdalene when Jesus casts seven demons out of her. Then Mary Magdalene was one of Jesus’ followers. She may have financially supported Jesus’ travels and at times, she probably traveled with Jesus and the twelve.
Mary Magdalene
Matthew 28:1-10
It was dawn, the morning after the Sabbath. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary returned to the tomb. Suddenly, the ground began to quake and an angel of the Lord descended from heaven. The angel shone with light and his clothes were as white as snow. The angel rolled back the stone that covered the entrance of the tomb. Then he sat on the stone. The guards shook with fear. They could not move or speak. They appeared dead.
Then the angel spoke to the women. “Do not be afraid. I know that you are looking for Jesus. He is not here. He has been raised. Come and look.”
The angel continued, “Go quickly and tell the disciples. They must go to Galilee and see Jesus.”
The women were both fearful and overjoyed. They ran to announce the news to the disciples. On their way, Jesus met them and greeted them. The women knelt down, embraced his feet and did him homage.
Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go tell my disciples to go to Galilee. I will see them there.”
