Last time, Vera snuck out of her parents’ house and went on her own through the dark streets of Vista Falls in search of “The Woman in Gray.” At the old courthouse, she found, instead, Mr. Barrymore. She lied to Mr. Barrymore and told him that she wasn’t a student, but rather a teacher at Vista Falls Junior High. He pretended to believe her, but exposed her lie. Mr. Barrymore said that if Vera didn’t cooperate with him, he’d turn her in for breaking the curfew law. He became more and more enraged. Then, he told Vera that he’d call the police and make sure she went to jail if she didn’t tell him where Mina was. As Mr. Barrymore became increasingly angry, Vera became more frightened. What did she do? Here’s what you decided.

Chapter 27
Shin Guard

“Leave me alone!” Vera screamed.

“Keep your voice down.” Mr. Barrymore hissed.

Vera began to tremble.

“Just go away.” Vera said.

“Tell me where Mina is, and I’ll leave right now.”

“I don’t know where Mina is.” Vera shook her head.

“And you’re a drama teacher at the Junior High School. Why should I believe a word you say?” Mr. Barrymore grumbled.

“If you don’t leave me alone, I’ll…” Vera began.

“You’ll what?” Mr. Barrymore took another step closer.

Vera took a deep breath and pulled back her right leg. With all her might, she kicked Mr. Barrymore in his shin.

Mr. Barrymore screamed in pain. “How dare you!”

With that, Vera ran off as fast as she could.

She could hear Mr. Barrymore screaming after her.

“I’ll get you for this, little girl!” Mr. Barrymore shouted as Vera ran off.

Vera ran past the old courthouse and into the town square. She looked franticly for someone—anyone—who could help her, but the square was empty.

Meanwhile, back at the old courthouse, Mr. Barrymore limped over to a park bench and sat down heavily.

“Horrible, little girl.” He muttered, rubbing his hurt leg. “Thinks she can get away with that. I’ll show her.”

Mr. Barrymore took his cell phone from the pocket of his coat.

He dialed a number.

“Yes, it’s me. What do you mean I woke you up? I don’t care if I woke you up. You started this whole mess. You’re the one who’s always saying you want to be in control of everything. Well, take control! We’ve got a problem. One of those meddling teens from the junior high just kicked me. Yes, one of the red-headed twins. She’s sneaking around the courthouse. That’s right. You know what to do.”

He hung up the phone.

“Good luck, little girl.” Mr. Barrymore chuckled to himself. “Let’s see if you can outsmart ‘The Woman in Gray.’”

At that very moment Vera ducked into the alley behind Kitty Conn’s Candy Corner.
She checked the back door, hoping Mrs. Conn might have left it unlocked.

The door was locked.

Vera knew that Mrs. Conn’s assistant, Johann, and his wife, June, lived in the apartment above the bakery. She thought about shouting to them, so they could let her in. But, she didn’t want to wake their baby. “Besides,” Vera thought, “they’ll just call my mom and dad and I’ll be in big trouble.”

Vera thought about going home and sneaking back in. Maybe no one would notice that she had left in the first place. Maybe no one had to know.

“Barrymore will tell on me. He’s probably already called my house.” Vera thought to herself. “What am I going to do?”

What should Vera do?
