Last time. Mr. Barrymore approached the teens about getting them to help him find Mina. They told him that he should leave them alone. Mr. Barrymore became enraged, as he often does. Mr. Barrymore’s loud voice alerted Mr. Dinello who came to see what was going on. Mr. Barrymore changed his story when Mr. Dinello became involved and suggested that they’d never find Mina. However, Mr. Dinello knew exactly where Mina was. Mr. Barrymore was very eager to find out where Mina had gone. Did Mr. Dinello tell the unusual man? Here’s what you decided.
Chapter 23
A Mina Situation
“Oh, has she gone home?” Mr. Barrymore asked. “I’d like to see her.”
“I don’t think she wants to see you.” Vera chimed in.
“Vera, let’s try to be polite.” Mr. Dinello said gently. “However, Mr. Barrymore, Vera does have a point. I don’t think Mina would be eager to see you tonight.”
“So, I’ll visit her tomorrow. Where is she?” Mr. Barrymore asked.
“You know, Mr. Barrymore,” Mr. Dinello began, “I think it might be best to wait until tomorrow to see if Mina calls you herself. I’m sure she’s pretty upset about what happened at the hotel tonight. She may just need an evening to calm down.”
“Calm down?” Mr. Barrymore’s eyes showed his anger. “Calm down from what? She owes me.”
“She owes you?” Mr. Dinello asked. “What does she owe you?”
“Her respect and her loyalty!” Mr. Barrymore answered.
“For what?” Mr. Barrymore asked.
“Well,” Mr. Barrymore thought for a second. “For the fact that I had given her a job. She owes me loyalty for that.”
“But, you fired her.” Vera spoke up. “Many times.”
“At the end of it all, I was going to let her keep her job.” Mr. Barrymore growled.
“Mr. Barrymore, the only thing we really owe each other is kindness and respect. Our health and well-being as people is the most important thing. That’s more important than doing what one person wants whenever he wants it, that’s more important than getting things when we think we should get them. The only thing that really matters is each individual person’s safety, health and well-being. You’ve asked me what I teach my students. If I try to teach them anything, it’s that. To be respectful and remember that above all else, a healthy life is the most important thing.” Mr. Dinello said plainly.
“You’re soft-hearted and weak.” Mr. Barrymore growled. “I see I’ll have to go about this my own way.” With that, he stormed off into the darkness.
“I wonder what he’s going to do.” Kate said.
“I don’t know.” Ward shrugged. “But, I’ll bet it isn’t good.”
“Maybe we should warn Mina.” Lucy suggested. “You know, tell her that she might be getting a visit from Mr. Barrymore.”
“That’s not a bad idea.” Rick nodded.
“But, Mr. Dinello just got through saying that Mina wanted to be left alone.” TJ spoke up.
“Well, she didn’t want to be bothered by Mr. Barrymore.” Mr. Dinello explained. “But, her friend did say that she wouldn’t mind if we visited. She has some things she wants to tell us about what she knows about the so-called ghost. I have the address where she’s staying.”
“Should we go over there right now?” Kate asked.
“I think we should!” Lucy nodded. “Then, we could tell her about the job opening at dad’s store! She could go over and apply in the morning!”
“And, she could tell us what she knows about the bizarre things that have happened at the hotel.” Ward agreed. “Then, we could come back here and tell Chief Colbert and Officer Littlepoole.
“But, what about Chief Colbert and Officer Littlepoole?” Vera asked. “They wanted us to stay out here and wait for them. Besides, I want to know what’s going on in there. Isn’t anyone else curious about who hit the museum curator on the head? I know I am.”
“I am, too.” Delia said. “And, it’s getting so late. Mina probably wants to rest right now. We can see her in the morning.”
“But, she might be able to help us by giving us some more clues.” Ward shook his head. “That would only help Chief Colbert in his investigation.”
Mr. Dinello scratched his head. “I did tell Sam we’d stay right here.”
“We can leave a note.” Ward suggested.
“Or one of us could go in there and tell Chief Colbert what we’re doing.” Rick said.
“Hey, if I can’t go in there and be a part of the investigation, no one is going in there.” Vera pouted. “Remember, I was supposed to be the lead investigator on this case.”
“Well, right now, I’m the person in charge.” Mr. Dinello smiled.
“Fine, then.” Vera stamped her foot. “What are we going to do?”
