Why Are Most Catholic Schools
Named After Saints?

Catholic Schools Week is a huge celebration because of the incredible scope of the Catholic School system in the United States. It is one of the largest school systems in the world—including over 8,000 Catholic schools. Its history goes back nearly 300 years—all the way back to Colonial times.

The total enrollment in Catholic schools is more than 3 million students. The number of teachers staffing our Catholic schools is about 165,000. It is fascinating to point out that many of the 8,000 Catholic schools are named after saints. There is a special connection between the lives of the saints and this year’s theme for Catholic Schools Week. Saints are models of faith.
