Monthly Activity
October
Each monthly Creating a Faith-filled Home activity has a particular theme chosen specifically to engage young children. Finding objects around the house or in their toy stash is an excellent way to physically involve them in the monthly family activity. Assigning a particular place where items from the family activity can remain on display for the month, such as the kitchen counter or the family table invites further conversation with your children and will reinforce and deepen understanding.
Light and Darkness
Scripture
In the beginning, when God created the heavens and earth…God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night.
Based on Genesis 1:1-5
In preparation for this activity, make it a point to go outside during the day when the sun is shining brightly. Share with your child that God created the sun to light up the day. Ask: How does the sun make you feel? Do you think the trees and plants like the sun? Why? Do the animals who live outdoors like the sun? Why? Also make a trip outside at night. Point out the moon and stars that light up the night. Ask: How do the moon and stars help us at night? Do you think the animals who live outdoors use the moon and stars too? How? Do the sun, moon and stars ever turn off or are they shining all of the time?
Go through magazines and find pictures of the sun, moon and stars, tear them out or quickly cut them out. Help your child glue the items to a large paper on which you have written the words: God made the light and it is GOOD! Place your completed project in a place of honor where it can be seen and referred to often.
