Monthly Family Activity
June
Each monthly Creating a Faith-filled Home activity has a particular theme chosen specifically to engage young children. Finding objects around the house or in their toy stash is an excellent way to physically involve them in the monthly family activity. Assigning a particular place where items from the family activity can remain on display for the month, such as the kitchen counter or the family table invites further conversation with your children and will reinforce and deepen understanding.
Land and Seas
Scripture
And God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.
Based on Genesis 1:9-10
In preparation, visit some bodies of water. Go to a lake, pond, or river; go wadding, swimming, or fishing. Building your own little lake or a little river in the yard or at the beach is a good way to teach your child how God gathered the waters into certain places so the land could appear for growing things.
Bath and/or shower time makes for good conversation about the gift of water. Discuss how it keeps us clean, helps us cool off when we are hot and is exceptional for drinking. On a hot day, surprise your child by setting up the sprinkler and running through the cold water together. Drink a big glass of ice water and quench your thirst.
Share the story of your child’s Baptism. Show them how the priest poured water over their head and baptized them “In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.” Tell them that this is how we became a part of God’s family forever. Help your child fill a small, clear glass bowl with water and place it on the table where you have your family meals. As a part of your prayer at meals, have family members take turns holding the water bowl while others dip their fingers into the water and make a small cross on their forehead. This is a great daily reminder of our Baptism in Jesus.
