Each monthly Creating a Faith-filled Home activity has a particular theme chosen specifically to engage young children. Finding objects around the house or in their toy stash is an excellent way to physically involve them in the monthly family activity. Assigning a particular place where items from the family activity can remain on display for the month, such as the kitchen counter or the family table invites further conversation with your children and will reinforce and deepen understanding.

Specific Lights for Day and Night

God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. God set them in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.
Based on Genesis 1:16-18

On a large paper write the words: God made the light and it is GOOD! Draw a line down the center and label one half “day” and the other half “night.” Help your child select crayons or markers to use in making the sun for the day. Encourage them to make the sun on the “day” half of the paper. Drawing very large will show how powerful the sun’s light is. Do the same with the moon and stars for the “night” half of the paper. It would be wise to help your child color the background of the “day” and “night” sky. They will likely tire from the task if expected to do it alone. But if you help they will likely finish.

If possible, let your child stay up a little later and take them for a short walk to see the night sky. Ask which gives more light to us, the sun or the moon and stars? Is it easier to see where we are going with the sun helping us in the day or the moon and stars at night?

As a part of your night prayer have your child repeat the following after you:
Thank you God for the sunshine.
Thank you for the moon and stars at night.
They are very GOOD! Amen.
