Hunger

povertyNow the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions. Everything they owned was held in common. There was not a needy person among them. Those who owned lands or houses sold them. They brought the proceeds to the apostles, and it was distributed to each as any had need. (Based on Acts 4:32-35)

We live in a society of instant gratification. We can put coins into a machine and immediately a snack or can of soda appears. We can pull-up to a drive-through window of a fast food restaurant and have an entire meal in minutes. Help children understand that for some people, hunger is a real and life threatening experience. Help them develop patterns which raise their consciousness and encourage them to make regular donations to food shelves or shelters.

• Organize a food drive in your neighborhood. Let people know in advance that you will collect items for the food shelf at a designated day and time. If possible, call your local food shelf and find out if there are and specific needs and do a food specific drive.

• Go grocery shopping with your parent. Pick out a special item to donate to your local food shelf. Perhaps you can pay for it with your own money.
