Can the Pope make a mistake?
Children may have heard of the Catholic doctrine of infallibility and need to understand the very restrictive sense in which we believe that the Holy Spirit preserves the Pope from error. We start by admitting that the Pope can and does make mistakes as a human being, just like the rest of us. But when he speaks in his most solemn and official capacity as Head of the Church--and does so in union with all of the other bishops in the world on a matter of faith or morals--then the Pope is preserved from error. This special charism is given to the Church at large in fulfillment of Jesus' promise at the Last Supper (John 16:13) that the Holy Spirit would preserve us in truth. Jesus assured us that God will not let us stray from the truth in any major way, and we believe that promise is fulfilled when the Pope makes a solemn declaration that he intends to be infallible teaching.
Is the devil real? Can he hurt me?
The images of the devil which children are exposed to in the popular media--especially in "horror films"--are often not helpful in the development of a healthy religious imagination. On the one hand, such images can make children needlessly fearful of a diabolic force that wreaks physical destruction on innocent little ones; while on the other hand, the image of the devil can seem so fantastic that children judge his reality on a par with Jedi warriors and talking dragons. It is a delicate task to teach children about the reality of the devil in a way that is spiritually helpful to them. The unbroken tradition of the Church requires that we instill in children knowledge that evil exists, and that there is a personal force of evil, which we name as the devil. Yes, the devil is real, and the lure of evil is such that the devil will ever pose a threat to our salvation. However, in talking to children about the hurt that the devil can bring about, it is important to minimize the kind of physical assault that makes for nightmares. Rather, we need to explain the spiritual danger that evil poses, and how seductive can be the lures that the devil uses (pride, greed, lust, anger, and so forth) to "hurt" us by separating us from the love of God and neighbor.
