Movie Review: Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium

This is a Walden/Mandate/Fox film that is rated G.

What is this movie about?

This movie is about a magical toy store run by 243-year-old Mr. Magorium. Other people in the story include: Molly Mahoney, the store manager; Henry Weston, the accountant, and Eric Applebaum, a kid who spends lots of time at the store. Mr. Magorium is getting ready to die. He plans to leave the store to Molly. As Mr. Magorium gets closer to dying, the store begins to lose its magic.

What did you like about this movie?
I really liked Mr. Magorium and all the magical things in the toy store.

What didn’t you like about this movie?

I didn’t like it that the toy store started losing its magical qualities when Mr. Magorium was getting ready to die.

Would you recommend this movie?

I think this movie is a good family movie because all ages would enjoy it, although, I’m not sure really young children will understand it.

Does this movie try to teach anything?
This movie teaches about the importance of believing in ourselves.


Movie Review: The Original Christmas Classics, Limited Keepsake Edition

What is this movie about?
This DVD set includes seven of the classic television holiday specials: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Cricket on the Hearth, Frosty the Snowman, Frosty Returns, Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town, The Little Drummer Boy, and Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol.

What did you like about this movie?

I really liked all of the short movies. The two I liked best were Frosty the Snowman and The Little Drummer Boy. This particular DVD set comes with a CD of the music.

What didn’t you like about this movie?

It was strange to see these old-fashioned movies. I am used to the animation that is used in our movies today.

Would you recommend this movie?

I think that this whole collection of movies is an excellent way for families to celebrate Christmas together. Our family watched them together. My parents told us kids about their memories of watching these shows on television when they were little. We also talked about how wonderfully these simple movies teach important values and the meaning of the holiday season.

Does this movie try to teach you anything?

These movies teach lots of important values, but mostly about the meaning of Christmas.

Movie Review: Bee Movie

This is a DreamWorks film that is rated PG.

What is this movie about?
This movie is about a bee named Barry. After graduation, Barry realizes that he is destined to spend the rest of his life as a worker bee, doing the same old job in the Honex Corp. hive. Against his parents’ wishes, he decides that he wants more out of life.

What did you like about this movie?
I thought this movie was really funny. I laughed out loud many times.

What didn’t you like about this movie?
There was not anything that I did not like about this movie.

Would you recommend this movie?
I thought this movie was great. I think it would make a good family movie because adults will also think it is funny. The movie was written by Jerry Seinfeld.

Does this movie try to teach anything?
Even though this movie is so funny, it does teach us that bees are essential to our existence.

Movie Review: The Game Plan

This is a Disney film that is rated PG.

What is this movie about?
This movie is about a professional football star named Joe Kingman. He was the stereotypical partying athlete. Then one day a seven-year-old little girl arrives on his doorstep. It turns out that she is Joe’s daughter, Peyton. Joe never knew that he and his ex-wife had a daughter. At first, Joe tries to get rid of his daughter. But it does not take long for the two to develop a father-daughter relationship.

What did you like about this movie?
I liked it that Joe was able to change. All he cared about before his daughter showed up was himself. Once he became a father, he learned to care for someone else for a change.

What didn’t you like about this movie?
I didn’t like it that Joe tried to get rid of his daughter when she first arrived.

Would you recommend this movie?
I think this would be a good family movie. I think parents would like this movie as much as their kids. It probably isn’t a good movie for real young children.

Does this movie try to teach you anything?
This movie teaches about the importance of taking responsibility for ourselves and others and about the importance of commitment.

Movie Review: Mr. Bean’s Holiday

This is a Universal film that is rated G.

What is this movie about?
Mr. Bean wins first prize in a church raffle, a trip to Cannes on the French Riviera. With Mr. Bean, things always seem to go wrong. In this story, Mr. Bean ends up taking a taxi to the wrong part of Paris. There he accidentally separates a father and son. The father is Emil, a Russian film critic on his way to the Cannes film festival. The son’s name is Stepan. Mr. Bean and Stepan team up to try to reach Cannes.

What did you like about this movie?
I really like Mr. Bean. He is very funny and it seems like funny things are always happening to him.

What didn’t you like about this movie?
There was not anything that I did not like about this movie.

Would you recommend this movie?
I thought this movie was great. I think it would make a good family movie because adults and kids would both enjoy it. There are a couple parts that might frighten young children.

Does this movie try to teach anything?
This movie pokes fun at people in a good way. It reminds us not to take everything or ourselves too seriously.

Movie Review: Ratatouille

This is a Disney/Pixar film that is rated G.

What is this movie about?
This animated movie is about a rat named Remy and a restaurant garbage boy named Linguini. Remy, inspired by Auguste Gusteau—a deceased chef who had his own cooking show, dreams of becoming a chef. One day, Remy gets separated from his family in a storm drain. Alone in the night, Remy wanders until he finds himself at Auguste’s restaurant. Remy finds his way to the kitchen and adds his own touch to the soup. Linguini gets the credit. Remy and Linguini decide to work together. Remy hide’s under Linguini’s chef hat as he gives Linguini directions. All their dishes get rave reviews.

What did you like about this movie?
I really liked how Remy and Linguini worked together. They were able to do what neither one could do alone.

What didn’t you like about this movie?
I didn’t like it that Linguini let his success go to his head.

Would you recommend this movie?
I thought this was really good movie. This would be a great family movie because all ages would enjoy it.

Does this movie try to teach you anything?
This movie teaches about the importance of team work and following your dreams.

Movie Review: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

This is a Warner Brothers film that is rated PG-13.

What is this movie about?
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is the fifth book/movie in the Harry Potter series. In this story, Harry and his friends, Hermione and Ron, form a group of students called Dumbledore’s Army. The group secretly practices the magic they must use to protect themselves when Voldemort returns.

What did you like about this movie?
I liked everything about this movie. It is my favorite of all the Harry Potter movies so far.

What didn’t you like about this movie?
There are some scary parts. But I kept reminding myself that everything would turn out okay.

Would you recommend this movie?
I thought this movie was excellent! But it is not appropriate for young kids. The PG-13 rating is good advice.

Does this movie try to teach anything?
In the movie, Sirius, Harry’s godfather, says, “We all have a light and dark inside. What matters is what we choose to act on.” He teaches us that we have to take responsibility for our choices.

Movie Review: Surf's Up

This is a Columbia Pictures film that is rated PG.

What is this movie about?
This movie is about a penguin surfer named Cody Maverick. In the movie a film crew is following Cody to make a documentary. It is kind of like a movie in a movie. Cody enters a Big Z Memorial Surf Off.

What did you like about this movie?
I thought this movie was enjoyable and entertaining.

What didn’t you like about this movie?
I wasn’t too sure about seeing another movie about penguins, but this one was different enough that I did like it.

Would you recommend this movie?
I thought this movie was really good. It would be a good family movie because I think all ages would enjoy it. There is some language and there are some jokes that are not appropriate for young children.

Does this movie try to teach you anything?
This movie teaches us that winning isn’t everything.
