Year B
Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year B
October 29, 2006

Read Sunday's gospel, Mark 10:46-52.

Gospel Summary
About to leave Jericho, Jesus heard the commotion made by the blind beggar, Bartimaeus, who called to the Son of David. Bartimaeus acknowledged the royal lineage of Jesus and also believed in his healing powers. Jesus responded by calling Bartimaeus' friends to bring the beggar to him. Bartimaeus threw off his cloak once he was healed. Some say this gesture was symbolic of Bartimaeus shedding his old, sinful ways for the new life Jesus had given him.

Reflection for Families
All of us can sometimes feel like Bartimaeus. We know what the right thing is, but sometimes our friends or family members try to quiet us because we embarrass them. It may be that our friends even agree with us and know that we are right, but it's our voice that embarrasses them. We're causing a stir. Bartimaeus' friends were embarrassed by his loud shouts to Jesus, but Jesus honored his faith. In the end, Bartimaeus regained his sight and followed Jesus. We can't give in to the shushing of our friends either. Even when our stand is unpopular, we must follow the way of Jesus.

Bringing the Gospel Into Your Family
Take turns blindfolding members of the family and allow one member to lead one who is blindfolded on a “trust walk.” With the other person's guidance, the “blind” person may try doing normal tasks around the house or in the yard. After each person has had a chance to be “blind” and also to lead, share your impressions with one another. What were your fears? Did you feel isolated and alone? Think of people you know who may feel these same fears and experience the same isolation. They may have their visual sight, but perhaps they are blind in some other way. How can you, individually or as a family, lead them just as you led one another on the trust walk?
