Pope Benedict’s Visit to the United States, Part1:
“Christ Our Hope”
On April 15, Pope Benedict XVI will make his first visit to the United States since he was elected pope three years ago. The Pope’s time in the US is limited to only a few days and he will only visit two cities: Washington and New York. Yet, his intention is to “reach out to all Catholics in the United States.” Together with the US Bishops, Pope Benedict XVI chose three words as the theme for this important journey: “Christ Our Hope.” Pope Benedict XVI explains, “I shall come to the United States for the first time, to proclaim this great truth: Jesus Christ is hope for men and women of every language, culture, and social condition.”
While in Washington, Pope Benedict XVI will meet with President George Bush, heads of Catholic colleges and universities, and diocesan leaders. He will also meet with Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, Jews and representatives of other religions.
In New York, Pope Benedict will address the United Nations, pray with leaders from other Christian denominations and meet with young Catholics. He has also made time for a trip to Ground Zero, the site of the World Trade Center attack.
