The Communal Rite for Reconciliation

Rite of Reconciliation

Expressing Our Sorrow Together

We express our sorrow for our sins to God and one another. (.wav)

All: I confess to almighty God,
and to you, my brothers
    and sisters,
that I have sinned through
    my own fault
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done,
and in what I have failed to do;
and I ask blessed Mary,
    ever virgin,
all the angels and saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord
    our God.

Next, we stand and pray a litany of contrition or sing a song. Then we pray the Lord's Prayer. (.wav)

Priest: Let us now pray to God our Father in the words Christ gave us, and ask him for his forgiveness and protection from all evil.
All: Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

Individual Confession and Absolution

We then go individually to the priest to confess our sins. The priest extends his hands over our head or places his hands on our head as he prays: (.wav)

Priest:   God, the Father of mercies,
through the death and
    resurrection of his Son
has reconciled the world
    to himself
and sent the Holy Spirit
    among us
for the forgiveness of sins;
through the ministry
    of the Church
may God give you pardon
    and peace,

The priest makes the sign of the cross over our head as he says: (.wav)

Priest: and I absolve you from your sins
in the name of the Father,
and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.
Penitent: Amen.

Proclamation of Praise for God's Mercy

We have been reconciled with God and with our church family.

Reader: The Lord is loving and kind: his mercy is for ever.
All: The Lord is loving and kind: his mercy is for ever.
Reader: Worship the Lord with gladness; come to his presence with singing.
All: The Lord is loving and kind: his mercy is for ever.
Reader: Know that the Lord is God. It is he that made us, and we are his.
All: The Lord is loving and kind: his mercy is for ever.

Concluding Prayer of Thanksgiving

Together, we give thanks to God. The priest leads us in prayer, using these or similar words: (.wav)

Priest: All-holy Father,
you have shown us
    your mercy
and made us a new creation
in the likeness of your Son.
Make us living signs of
    your love
for the whole world to see.
We ask this through Christ
    our Lord.
All: Amen.
