Chapter
6: The Gift of Peace
Based on John
14:15-27 and 20:21
Scripture Background
After Jesus' death, the
disciples were afraid. They worried that they
too might be persecuted like Jesus. Jesus tries
to warn the disciples that he will not be with
them any longer. But he can see that in his
absence the disciples will need something to
help them. In this passage, Jesus promises to
send the Holy Spirit and he shares with them
the gift of peace.
Jesus said to his disciples,
"Soon, I will return to my Father. But
do not be afraid. You will not be alone. The
Father will send you the Holy Spirit in my name.
The Holy Spirit will be with you always. The
Holy Spirit will remind you of everything I
taught you. If you love me, you will keep my
commandments."
Jesus continued, "Rejoice with me. I am
going to the Father. I give you the gift of
my peace."
After Jesus died, he was raised from the dead.
He went to his disciples and said, "Peace
be with you."
