Chapter
2: The Great Commandment
Based on Matthew
22:34-40
Scripture Background
According to the Law
of Moses, people are to love God with their
whole heart, and soul, and strength (Deuteronomy
6:5). They should love their neighbor as themselves
(Leviticus 19:18).
Jesus was a great teacher. In this story, he
taught about God's law. Jesus teaches us about
the Great Commandment. He reminds us that the
Great Commandment has two parts: love of God
and love of others.
There was a man who
taught people about the commandments. He asked
Jesus this question. "Teacher, what is
the most important commandment?"
Jesus answered, "'Love God with all your
heart, soul, and mind.' This is the first and
greatest commandment. The second commandment
is like the first. 'Love others as much as you
love yourself.'"
